We have passed 25 Bills and considered 50 motions with Resolutions on them, Kwara Speaker at the 3rd Anniversary
Today is no doubt another significant one for us in this 9th Legislature in Kwara State. It marks the commencement of the last quarter of our sojourn in this Hallowed Chamber. Looking back at the last three years, a day like this affords us the opportunity to thank God for our lives, the grace of good health as well as for the peace and tranquility in the State. It is therefore not out of place to start this remark by giving glory to God.
Hon. Colleagues, it is a matter of stating the obvious that the current administration inherited a plethora of socio-economic challenges at inauguration. This myriad of problems cut across all the sectors of the State. We had to hit the ground running with robust legislation and necessary legislative interventions. All eyes were on us. It is therefore gladdening that in the last three years, we have strived as much as humanly possible, to discharge our statutory duties and responsibilities through effective involvement of the people. We have been able to effectively and efficiently discharge the functions of law making, representation and oversight in strict observance of the principles of transparency, equity and accountability with which we have been able to provide enabling environment for good governance in Kwara State through quality legislation.
We have also established cordial relationship with the Executive arm and this has really paid off. In addition, we have always ensured that Bills and other matters that deserve legislative attention are promptly attended to. In this regard, vital sectors such as Agriculture and Food Security, Health, Education, Social security, Youth employment and Job Creation, Land and Housing, Commerce, Women affairs, People with Disability, Child Rights, Works and Transport, security of lives and property, etc. that hitherto suffered neglect have been accorded the desired attention. We also have to our credit a number of other plausible legislative interventions on matters of governance. Similarly, we have also provided the State Government all the support required to resuscitate and sustain the hitherto abandoned obligations to counterpart fund of programmes and projects in critical sectors of the State especially Agriculture, Health, Education and Road infrastructure to mention but a few. This is however without prejudice to meticulous scrutiny as statutorily desired of us.
Let me state at this juncture that the prompt attention that requests from the Governor always enjoy in this chamber is a product of the unprecedented Executive-legislature synergy that is prevalent in the State and is borne out of our collective resolve as a government to swiftly take the State out of the woods and get it back on the path to rapid socio-economic development. Happily, all these have yielded the desired results. I thank all Kwarans for their abiding faith in us and for their cooperation and support so far.
For the record, the Hon. House has in the last three years passed a total of 25 Bills, considered 50 Motions with Resolutions on them forwarded accordingly. In this same vein, as of date, a total number of 41 Matters of General Public Importance in addition to 38 Reports have been presented on the Floor of the House and Resolutions on same forwarded to appropriate quarters for implementation. Passage of the Bills and Resolutions so far forwarded have greatly impacted positively on the lives of inhabitants of our dear State.
Notwithstanding our primary role as Lawmakers, we have also continued to compliment the developmental efforts of the State Government by facilitating infrastructure in our various Constituencies under the Grassroots Development initiative which commenced in 2020. This is one of our modest contributions to the welfare of our people with regards to provision of amenities. Individual Hon. Members have also commenced periodic Empowerment Programmes in our various Constituencies in year 2022.
Let me reiterate that the modest achievements of this 9th Assembly in the last three years would not have been possible without the cooperation of the Executive arm under His Excellency, Mallam Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq. We appreciate the Executive Governor for seeing the House as partners in progress and for according prompt attention to all our Resolutions. We look forward to more of this hand of fellowship from the Governor in the incoming legislative year.
At this point, I must acknowledge the loyal and hardworking workforce with which this Assembly is blessed. The management under the headship of the Clerk to the House, Hajia Halimat Jummai Kperogi and indeed the entire staff of the Assembly have all proved themselves to be reliable allies and goal-getters ready to give their best at all time. I appreciate your loyalty and support and I wish that these continue as we enter the last lap of the 9th Assembly.
Recognition is also due to the Chairman and Members of Kwara State House of Assembly Service Commission who are saddled with the responsibility of ensuring a dedicated, disciplined and motivated work force for the Assembly. I thank them for their zeal, dedication and cooperation.
To our dear wives, we say thank you for ensuring stability in our homes and for your understanding.
I must not end this remark without a note of acknowledgement and appreciation of our friends, gentlemen and women of the press particularly members of the Assembly Press Corps for their cooperation and support since inauguration to date. I thank you most sincerely and seek from you a more robust and cordial relationship this new legislative year.
We also thank the State Executive, Members and supporters of our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) for their support and cooperation since we came on board and urge them to keep hope alive by supporting the party in the 2023 General elections and beyond.
This piece will be incomplete if I fail to appreciate the people of Ilesha/Gwanara State Constituency for entrusting me with their mandate in 2019. I thank them for their support and cooperation in the past three years. I must specially thank my people for counting me worthy of another unopposed nomination to fly the APC flag for another term in the 2023 Elections. Let me say that in spite of our modest achievements together in the last 3 years, the best is yet to come.
Finally, I congratulate my Hon. Colleagues on our third anniversary as legislators in this Assembly. I thank you for your cooperation and understanding. I enjoin you to maintain the tempo until the very last day to enable our people gets the best that they deserve from this administration.
Happy anniversary.
