2027: Competence Should Be the Key Factor Beyond Zoning, Professor Wale Sulaiman Tells ASKOMP in Ilorin
Members of ASKOMP on Saturday held a media parley in Ilorin with a renowned world neurosurgeon and prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State, where he shared his vision for the future of the state ahead of the 2027 political cycle.
The interactive session, which brought together members of the association and media practitioners, provided a platform for the respected medical expert and political figure to outline his development agenda and perspectives on the political direction of Kwara State.
Speaking during the engagement, the neurosurgeon emphasized that competence, experience, and the capacity to deliver should be the major considerations in choosing the next leader of the state, rather than focusing solely on zoning arrangements.
According to him, while zoning has often been discussed in the political space, the ultimate goal should be to ensure that Kwara State is led by someone who possesses the vision, knowledge, and leadership ability required to move the state forward.
He explained that his interest in the state’s leadership conversation is driven by a strong desire to contribute meaningfully to Kwara’s development, drawing from his vast international exposure and professional accomplishments in the medical field.
During the parley, he highlighted key areas that he believes must receive urgent attention in order to transform the state. These include education, healthcare, security, infrastructure development, and poverty alleviation.
On education, he stressed the need for improved learning facilities, better teacher welfare, and policies that would position Kwara’s education sector to compete globally.
He also emphasized the importance of strengthening the healthcare system across the state, noting that quality medical services should be accessible to all citizens, particularly at the grassroots level.
Addressing security concerns, he called for proactive measures and stronger collaboration between communities and security agencies to ensure the safety of lives and property.
The APC chieftain further spoke on the need for sustainable infrastructure development, including improved road networks and basic amenities that can support economic activities across the state.
On poverty alleviation, he advocated policies that would empower young people, create employment opportunities, and encourage entrepreneurship as a pathway to economic stability.
He noted that Kwara State is blessed with enormous human and natural resources, but requires purposeful leadership and strategic planning to fully harness its potential.
In his remarks, the neurosurgeon also expressed confidence in his ability to provide the leadership needed to reposition the state, stating that his experience, exposure, and track record place him in a strong position among those aspiring to lead the state in the future.
He maintained that the conversation about the state’s future should prioritize merit, competence, and the collective interest of Kwarans.
The media parley ended with a call for continuous engagement among political stakeholders, civil society groups, and the media to promote constructive dialogue on the development of Kwara State.
