Happy birthday to our Captain, My Story: By Temitope Muyideen (Convydence)
On March 18, 2023, at precisely 6:18 PM, my phone rang, its screen lighting up with an incoming WhatsApp call. The number was unsaved yet familiar; it belonged to Luxiar Construction Company, a man I respect from afar deeply. As I answered, I couldn’t help but think, “This is the reigning man,” referring to the individual behind the call. Just prior to this moment, he had demonstrated incredible generosity by donating 100,000 Naira to our nascent enterprise, Confidence News Nigeria. This act of kindness came not through any direct interaction with me or my team but through Mr. Saheed Lawal, who had sent the funds in acknowledgment of our efforts.
When I picked up the call, a calm yet assertive voice greeted me, introducing himself as Muhydeen Okunlola Kayode (MOK). He spoke with a warmth and humility that seemed to embody our local essence. “I am calling to express my appreciation for your commendable work and the generous support you’ve shown for our family house project, the MOK Foundation,” he said. His words resonated with sincerity as he continued, “I just have a few clarifications to make. You have been doing remarkably well; I have been following your progress closely. Your product offers great value to the youth constituency. I always tell people that the MOK Foundation is not for political gain; it was established purely with the intention of giving back to the community. In a few years, the true impact of our efforts will be evident. Please feel free to call me anytime or ask for anything you might need. May God guide us all.” After this heartfelt exchange, he ended the call, that was the beginning of our bond and a shared vision for a thriving community.
From that moment onward, our communication deepened. He would reach out periodically, offering insights, mentorship, and even assignments that challenged and inspired me. What stood out most was his approach—never did he dictate orders. Instead, he would say, “Convydence, let us do this,” fostering a collaborative spirit. His humility combined with his sharp intellect made him a remarkable leader. He was emotional yet resilient, a steadfast support in times of need.
With every act of kindness he extended, I often found myself reflecting on his character. I would ponder, “Is this man truly one of us?” He helped people without hesitation, never looking back or expecting anything in return. He fulfilled each promise and treated everyone with dignity, regardless of their circumstances.
For those of us fortunate enough to be close to him, he has become an exemplary figure—always willing to listen to our concerns and offer tangible solutions. Even during his own personal challenges, he sought ways to be of service to us, demonstrating a remarkable selflessness. He detests oppression and hypocrisy, acting as a quiet warrior who has successfully fought many battles without seeking recognition. His integrity shines, and he embodies fearlessness, sincerity, and honesty.
On numerous occasions, his story speaks volumes about the kind of person he is, without him needing to boast or announce it. There is no one quite like him; he is a genuine leader of goodwill.
As I often remind him, the project is bigger than all of us. On the occasion of his birthday, I feel I have little to offer but my heartfelt prayers, unwavering love, and steadfast support. Happy birthday to our Captain, a man who inspires us all to strive for a better future.
